13 HABITS THAT WILL MAKE NEW MANAGERS HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”

 Stephen King

Every New Manager or Leader faces the challenge of being productive, getting things done faster, being efficient, and not losing time.

As the quote above says, many wait for inspiration to show up.

But it is the other way around, consistency, and self-discipline is the way to be more productive.

When your to-do list is so big and your schedule is overflowing with appointments and commitments, this seems to be an impossible thing or a distant dream.

But hold on it does not have to be that way.

High levels of productivity are possible if you adopt some healthy habits that foster productivity.

However, productivity is sometimes misinterpreted.

Some people think that productivity goes hand in hand with perfectionism, but this is not the case.

Spending too much time on a task and trying to make it perfect can lead to time losses.

Making your tasks more complex than they are will not make you more productive.

It will make you lose time and get lost in your task, leading to missed deadlines.

It is therefore essential to achieve high levels of productivity.

How can you do this?

Here are some ways you can do this:

  •  Set small and attainable goals.

  • Identify and block the time you are most productive during the day and take on to solve complex issues.

  • Arrange a dedicated working space so that your brain learns to associate it with efficiency and work. This will make it easier for you to find your flow and focus on your tasks.

  • Eliminate distractions by closing all social media and unnecessary tabs or putting your mobile phone away is important.

1.SET SMALL ATTAINABLE GOALS

Big and complex tasks cause overwhelm.

When big tasks are broken down into smaller actions, they seem to be easily attainable and less overwhelming.

Setting smaller and achievable goals is the key to getting more done in less time.

2.PRIORITISE

If you treat all tasks on your to-do list as equally important then, no task is important for you.

This is also a potential threat to productivity because it is easy to fall into the trap of striking items off the to-do list.

So know the difference between important and trivia. Here is a tool to help you with this.

Spend a few minutes at the beginning of each day to choose 1 to 3 of the Most Important tasks that will help you move forward.

3.PLAN.

It is wise to plan your day the night before or else you will end up wasting a lot of time the next day trying to figure out where to start.

One helpful tip is to review the day and see the to-do list to check the progress on what you have done.

4.FOCUS ON DOING DEEP WORK .

Some tasks are just hard. There’s no substitute for deep work. if anything, they’re hard to get yourself to do because they’re not especially interesting.

At the same time, some tasks are just difficult.

You can’t multitask your way to finishing them.

You need to devote serious time and mental effort to knocking them out of the park.

These tasks are called “deep work.”

Highly productive people have mastered the skill of deep work.

So focus on doing deep work when needed.

5.DEVELOP A LASER SHARP FOCUS.

Cultivating a laser-sharp focus can be mastered by anyone. It helps in better output

Set aside time for tasks that are of high value and give you Big Results.

Remove all distractions and focus on them single-mindedly.

Laser sharp focus leads to better output in terms of quality and quantity. It is important for deep work.

6.ORGANISATION

Disorganisation is a productivity killer. It obstructs your focus and is a real-time waster.

For higher productivity having systems in place helps you find out what you want when you want them.

You can quickly locate the information needed to support your goals.

So have an organizing mindset.

Keep important things organized in folders.

Have an organized to-do list.

There are apps like workflowy, dropbox, excel sheets, drive, etc to help you organise .

.

7.TRACK YOUR TIME.

If you’re still wondering how you can be more productive, track your time.

Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller states, “To this day, I keep a schedule that is almost minute by minute.”

When you feel like you waste time each day but aren’t sure where it’s going, you just need to raise your awareness.

Being conscious about where your day is going, will make you more conscious about your time so that you can notice and change it.

8.MANAGE YOUR ENERGY

Highly productive people know that it isn’t enough to have time to do things.

Managing your energy — to ensure that you tackle the most intense tasks while you have the energy to handle them — is an important secret to becoming productive.

If you are exhausted and can barely think, it doesn’t matter how many hours are left in the day. You won’t be able to use them productively.

Deal with the difficult tasks early in the day — by using your peak productive hours efficiently.

You can get more done in less time before you get tired.

9.HAVE A PRE-WORK RITUAL

“Wisdom is a measured routine.”

Benjamin Franklin

Studies have proven that your willpower and creativity are the strongest in the morning.

When you’re awake and energized before the rest of the world, you have more alone time to prepare for the day’s work.

It’s a few extra hours before emails start coming in, before your phone starts buzzing, and before you have to work with clients.

Most importantly, a consistent Pre Work Ritual is important for the rest of your day to be productive.

It sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps give you the momentum to get things done.

Rituals like starting your day with a healthy breakfast, light exercise, listening to music and reading, journaling, or meditation can help you clear your mind and have more energy throughout your day.

10.PRACTICE SAYING NO

New projects and opportunities crop up all the time.

It’s so tempting to say yes.

It’s easy to get excited by the possibilities — and then wind up with too many commitments.

Saying no is hard.

Remember ”YES” is a responsibility and ”NO ”is a choice.

Saying NO means consciously setting things aside so that you have the time to work on your most important priorities.

Read the post on the power of NO.

11. KEEP LEARNING

Develop a learning mindset.

In such times when things are changing rapidly, the only way to keep up is to keep learning.

If you do not know the answer, find it.

Get the requisite skills and training when you lack the ability or take the help of experts.

Join some mastermind groups that support your learning and growth.

CONCLUSION

Maybe the most important of them is that you save time for yourself, and can take on new challenges and tasks.

You can make the best use of your potential and feel fulfilled.
