MY LIFE BEFORE AND AFTER I STARTED MASTERING MY PRODUCTIVITY
I was just entering my 40s and was changing my career.
I had just quit my school job because I was stressed and had health problems.
While on the job, I was promoted to Coordinator and had to juggle between teaching, coordinating, and pursuing my Masters in Education.
I also had to look after 2 small children.
The stress was taking its toll on me.
I was always anxious and did not know where to focus.
I would feel tired and lethargic.
I did not know to take rest and rejuvenate.
The only thing that occupied my mind was work.
I had no idea about time management and productivity back then.
After quitting my job and taking up training in coaching, I learned about productivity and time management by reading articles and listening to videos from Brian Tracy, James Clear, Robin Sharma, and Leo Babauta.
I started following some principles suggested by them and they worked for me.
For instance, I started Planning and prioritizing every week, started doing meditation at least 4 to 5 times a week, and deep breathing 3 to 4 times a day.
I take plenty of rest on weekends to rest and recharge and spend time with my family.
Planning made it easier for me to get things done and use my potential optimally by identifying and delegating tasks that I was not good at.
I have become more intentional about how I spend my energy.
Earlier I believed I had to learn everything and I used to slog with work for days.
Later on, I learned about scheduling effectively and my schedule became more focused than a hectic one.
After working and developing this skill I realized that it has become easier for me to say NO to things that did not align with my strengths and interests or things that did not motivate me without feeling guilty.
Earlier I was a YES person, saying Yes to any and everything that came my way.
Now I have become more selective.
I have started valuing my time and efforts and since then things have started changing for me.
Ever since I started working on my productivity in the last 8 years, I have found myself getting more things done without losing much energy, all my key things are done in time, I enjoy a healthy work-life balance and good health and I feel fulfilled.
I have realized that productivity isn’t about doing more.
It is about doing less and doing quality work, that gives you satisfaction and fulfillment.
I can make better decisions and have less stress.
It is easy for me to say no.
All of these things were not possible before that and I used to be highly stressed and fatigued with no life-work balance and self-care.
After careful reflection, I have developed a simple and effective framework from my insights, which works well for me and can work well for you as well.
A simple framework that I use to be more productive each day.
1 Prioritise – I prioritize 1 main task for the day and 1 medium and 4 to 6 smaller tasks.
Research statistics show that a person cannot do more than 7 to 9 things in a day, so I stick to 6 to 8 things.
2 Designed an effective schedule – I have made a schedule that is effective for me.
Most people make a schedule that is FRANTIC and not FOCUSED which is why they are not effective with their tasks and take longer to accomplish them.
3.Leverage my peak productive hours-I schedule the toughest tasks during my peak productive hours ,which makes me do all the other things more effortlessly and experience more fulfillment each day.
It looks to me that I am making real progress each day.
4.Delegate –Yes I delegate tasks that I am not skilled at and those that steal me of my time and energy so that I can make the best use of my potential and get things done faster.
Along with the framework I use these tools and questions that help me stay organized and productive.
-
What is the most important thing that I could achieve today?
-
What are the second and third most important things I need to accomplish today?
-
What could I complete today that would make me happy when I end up my day today?
-
What can I do that will move me closer to achieving my goals?
-
What projects or tasks others are doing that I should follow up on?
-
Which people in my life need my attention today?
-
What tasks can I delegate to someone else today?
-
Am I making the best use of my potential today?
-
Am I adding any value today?
I hope you have found the framework and questions helpful.
